Too Long

Did not realize I hadn't posted in almost a week. I've got to be more regular about this.

Happenings:

- Got some new postcards. WIll have pictures later.

- Almost done with the semester. Many papers and projects to work on.

- I'm not signed up for any summer classes, but I'm attending one anyway because my summer job prospects are nil and said class is being taught by my favorite professor.

- I can't register for next semester because my records insisted I owed a fifty dollar fine. I do not, but I'll never be able to prove it, so I can only wait for the charge to clear before setting my schedule.

- I can't think of a good way to end this post :/

The House on Mango Street

I've seen this book around for years, but only read it today for Adolescent Literature tomorrow. It's not at all what I was expecting.

The narrative is not sequential at all, or if it is there's no indication. There aren't so much chapters as vignettes tied together by virtue of being narrated by the same character with a very slice of life tone. In short, it's exactly the kind of thing I would write were I so inclined to publish a book.

The kind of thing that is - I really enjoyed the format and the semi-lyrical style of the novels. However, the best slice of life stories infuse the everyday with magic, something this book didn't really do for me. It has its moments of course, and to be fair the everyday magic moments weren't really the point of it all; just a personal preference. I don't want to sell it short because it is quite good, but I'm measuring it up against a totally different set of standards.

I might post more after class discussion tomorrow.

Sent

Well, Round Robin 2.0 is on it's way. Things should start rolling around Wednesday <3

My mouth is still a bit sore from the dentist yesterday, but it should be back to normal by tomorrow or so. I'd like to clean my room this weekend, along with a host of other projects:

- Found Poetry assignment
- Finish papers for Adolescent Lit.
- NaPoWriMo
- Laundry
- Critiques

It's nearly summer break TT_TT

Round Robin 2.0

I'm almost ready to send the new Round Robin notebook. I'd like to fill out a few more pages to really get the ball going. I've only done five so far, which isn't many considering how small it is. That should save a bit on shipping though. I'm not sure what to write at the moment, being all caught up in NaPo for the rest of the month. Ideally, I'd like to get this sent by the weekend.

It's close to summer, so there may be address changes throwing a wrench in the works, but I'll deal with that when I get there. A smaller group this time may help keep things together a little more, or so I'm hoping. If things go well, I can add more people in I suppose but five is a good number.

Found Poetry Project

I need to do a ten minute PowerPoint presntation on Found Poetry for class. While there's plenty to go around on dA, I have to use pieces that have been published somewhere before :/

So, does anyone know where I can find some good stuff? Found magazine will have things, but I'd like to go with more variety that that. Blackout poetry would be pretty cool, but I don't think I've ever heard of a piece that's been published anywhere.

Dentist - Round One

Well, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. They gave me so much numbing agent I barely noticed they were poking around in my mouth. Most of it was fillings and fixing my front two teeth. They do look a lot better, though it's difficult to really tell as I'm still having trouble feeling a quater of my face. They also extraced two teeth which literally took about two minutes; I was expecting that to hurt at least a little. It didn't, just felt extremely odd.

The bleeding from extraction has nearly stopped, but my mouth is probably going to ache for at least the rest of the day once the numbness finally goes away. They gave me a perscription for Vicodin just in case. I've still got a lot of work that needs to be done in there, but at least I feel like I can handle now.

I Accientally A Meme

NaPoWriMo is a-goin'~

As far as my writing goes, I've felt pretty accomplished this month. I haven't been doing a poem a day, but I have been working each day, which is just as good if you ask me.

I'm amused by how the color poems have taken off. The form isn't mine, but I've introduced it to the dA lit. community - it's requirements are simple and flexible, so even people who hate from can take it on and do something original with it. I've done four myself, and I've found at least five others derived from mine in one way or another. I'm interested in seeing where this goes.

I'm also amused that everyone has been choosing unusual colors. I've done periwinkle, chartreuse, salmon, and tyrian purple, while I've seen others do opal, ruby, obsidian, denim, and jade. Red just isn't good enough - it's gotta be crimson or sanguine or cherry XD

A Day Out

My parents found a store a few days ago called Charming Charlie's in the Promenade, aka, the richer side of Little Rock. It's an accessory store - jewelry, hats, scarves, sunglasses, headbands, the works.

I don't do the whole "girly-girl" thing - I don't mess with make up or nail polish, I don't spend hours on my hair, I don't buy frilly clothes or outfits I don't need. But, for some reason, I have a crippling weakness for accessorizing. I love unusual necklaces or cute earrings, and I'm constantly looking out for the perfect bag (needs to be large enough to hold a standard size writing notebook, one novel, my headphones, wallet, cell phone, and have some room left over. Must come equipped with adjustible shoulder strap).

I don't pretend to understand why I get so giddy over it; sometimes it's better not to question.

I think you can guess a bit at what sort of person I am by the accessories I walked out with XD The bicycle was kinda Steampunk-ish; I was torn between it and the typewriter, but decided it looked better.

I've always had a thing for butterflies. I used to make them out of coffee filters and water when I was little to hang on my walls. I think they're so pretty~ Similar story for keys - I love keys and locks. I think it goes with the Steampunk vibe a bit. Those vintange, ornate skeleton keys get right in my weak spot.

And of course, the little robot was too adorable to pass up <3

Periwinkle

Tonight was library night and it's also National Poetry Month - unfortunatley, only myself, the instructor, and one other person showed up tonight. In all fairness, we usually have meetings two weeks apart, and our last one was on the 29th. And our next one isn't for a month because other library event screw up our schedule.

Anyway, we did some found poetry and took on rigidly structured poetry, but the only thing that came out well tonight was the color poem. The form is thus:

Line 1 - Your color
Lines 2, 3, 4 - things your color looks like
Lines 5, 6, 7 - things your color sounds like
Lines 8, 9, 10 - things your color tastes like
Lines 11, 12, 13 - things your color feels like
Line 14 - sum it all up.

And lo;

Periwinkle
is a patch of open sky,
a gingham plaid skirt,
the slate of your eyes.
It chimes tiny bells when you speak
and startles birds into flight and runs
think like heavy syrup
on cottony pancakes
that taste lighter than air
and leave my mouth dry,
empty,
hungry,
for a flash of pale blue in summer.

I genuinely enjoy how well this one came out for a change. I don't usually like my library poems this much <3

Already Behind

On NaPoWriMo that is. I'm actually more or less caught up with schoolwork for a change. And I can even shift the blame for NaPo since they posted the first challenge late.

In other news, I'm going to try my hand at a sestina. I have a feeling we're going to write them in class on Wednesday, so may as well get the jump on it. I'd like to try starting that tonight, but have some doubts concerning my success XD
